A restaurant usually needs a cook, waiters and a dishwasher. Through all these people, an evening in a restaurant will run smoothly. But will a restaurant without staff also be possible? You can try it by letting the guest be staff.
WHAT IS THIS RESTAURANT?
Foodsy is a new and innovative restaurant without staff. The first of its kind. It opened on the 5th of November at a pop-up location in Amsterdam. Cook and food creative Edwin Sander, who is an excellent chef, made this concept. It will be an absolute game changer in the world of restaurants. He wants to create a cultural movement, by letting the guests take all the responsibility. People will get to experience how it will be to be a server themselves. Edwin made this concept because of the big problem with good and well-trained staff.
WHAT WILL THE GUEST BE IN FOODSY?
It takes a lot of money and a lot of time to manage a well-run restaurant. Furthermore, people will do things by themselves more and more, they grow their own vegetables and brew their own beer. So they are able to cope with such a responsibility. In Foodsy, the guest is cook, waiter/waitress and unfortunately dishwasher.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
A reservation isn’t possible in the restaurant because it is not reachable by phone. This concept has to be in charge of its own, according to Edwin. Edwin has the confidence in the guest, that they will pay the bill from decency. There are instructions how guests can prepare the meals, make their drinks properly and a sticker system to find the ingredients. Even a bad cook will manage to create a delicious meal in Foodsy with these instructions and sticker system.
WHY IS IT COOL?
This restaurant creates, because of the absence of staff, a living room society. People want to go outdoor with their friends, meet each other at a cozy location rather than a big and commercialized location. This concept is less over-marketed. This location has to feel like their own living room. Foodsy achieved this special need for them. The guests are outdoor though, on the other hand, can still feel like home. And they also get to experience it with their friends. Also, the confidence that Foodsy has in the guests is very special. They can decide not to pay the bill…
A REACTION AGAINST INDIVIDUALISATION?
While people are becoming increasingly more independent, they also feel alone and want to share their stories and meet friends. They basically want socialization. In this restaurant, people can do all these things together.
JUST A JOKE???
If you had tendency to go. You are too late, Foodsy has already closed their doors three days after the opening. The union FNV Horeca did an experiment to prove that staff is indispensable to a restaurant. After one night this statement was realized; it was a disaster and the food was horrible. FNV Horeca wants to indicate the very important role of staff in a restaurant. They get underpaid. So these people deserve a fair wage. The Netherlands is in desperate need for staff in restaurants. This experiment showed that restaurants and their staff will keep existing in the future and will be even more respected for their hard work.
