The shocking experiment

WHAT IS THIS EXPERIMENT ALL ABOUT?

Everybody does it yet it is a shameful thing to admit … having prejudices. People condemn others based on their perceived group and complexion. People make up their mind about someone within seven seconds. Scientist who recently performed a social experiment on behalf of Coca-Cola questioned how people react when they only hear voices and can’t see anything.

WHAT DID THEY DO?

They placed six strangers in a pitch black room, who would see each other in a very different way. Every stranger told something about themself, such as their interests and hobbies. After this the other ones did their best guess about how this person would look like according to the others. Then the light switched on. The reaction and result was pleasantly surprising: almost all the prejudices about their appearances were incorrect. Coca-Cola wanted to make a statement that labels are for cans, not people.

WHY IS IT COOL?

With this social experiment people become conscious about making prejudices and assuming wrongful stereotypes. Because the strangers couldn’t see each other, they made their judgment and identity of the others by just listening. The message is very obvious: nobody shouldn’t judge people by their looks, we shouldn’t judge them before getting to know them first to really know who they are.

WHAT CAN IT CHANGE?

Identity isn’t only about your appearance. Identity is also based on your status. It’s about what you do, love and are. This special experiment makes an important contribution to contemporary debates on identities. It will addresses issues in the future of commonalities, differences and the contradictory nature of prejudices.

WHAT CAN YOU LINK THIS TO?

Every individual has his own identity. Individualism gives people the chance to feel free to create your own identity and they don’t have to compare themselves with people based on their role or place in a particular group. People are able to be themselves, your appearance doesn’t matter.
