A lot of food is thrown away year after year. This isn’t good for the planet and can have a huge effect on the future of our existence. Is there a way to prevent the consequences? Yes, by starting a supermarket, which only sells food that has already passed its expiration date.

WHAT IS WEFOOD?

WeFood started a supermarket in Copenhagen (Denmark) which steps in the battle to combat serious food waste a few months ago. The store only sells surplus products, which passed its expiration date or are damaged but are still edible at the moment of being throw out. All the products are sold at a discount between 30 and 50 percent below the supermarket prices, a gigantic difference with normal prices. The founders wanted to make consumers aware of the huge amount of food being thrown away per year. Their ultimate aim is to be a part of the mainstream market.

WHAT KIND OF PEOPLE GO TO WEFOOD?

Everyone. The store is the first-of-it-kind supermarket and it’s a big success and very popular. They expected especially low-income people, who have in this supermarket the opportunity to buy their products in a bigger amount. But surprisingly, also consumers visited WeFood for more political reason. The consumer sees the new supermarket as a positive and politically correct way to access the issue. You can infer that Denmark is in the midst of a country-wide anti-food waste movement.

FOOD WASTE, WHY IS THIS SUCH A BIG ISSUE?

Food waste is a worldwide issue. People from Denmark throw away about 700,000 tons of their food per year. Regrettably, this is a low number compared to other countries. 30 to 50 percent of all food in the world goes straight to the wastebasket, whereas this food also could go to countries where people aren’t able to take care of themselves.

WHY IS IT COOL?

There is a need for a better and sustainable world, where the problem of food waste must be solved. This subject has bad consequences, especially when it comes to ecology, economy and social. Through WeFood, the world will be affected in a positive way because people who visit the supermarket don’t depend on food waste. Furthermore, many people have been collaborated to make this venture a success. WeFood came out of prosperous crowdfunding and made different collaborations with many interest groups and supermarkets, who help stock the shelves with their food.

WILL WEFOOD BE A START OF SOMETHING NEW?

The supermarket has already been a success and will hopefully also be in the future. People have become aware that the expiration date doesn’t mean you cannot eat it anymore. By doing so, we are more economical. I think the agribusiness and meat industry won’t have to produce so much food anymore in the future. WeFood is an environmental initiation of today for tomorrow.
